Novatel Swings for the Fence with Carney Appointment

By Sara Brown

Novatel is gearing up for a big Spring. Last week, they made news with the acquisition of Feeney Wireless. Today they announced the appointment of a new Executive Vice President for Sales and Marketing: John Carney. He starts the new gig on the 20th.

On the off chance the name doesn’t ring a bell, here are the goods on Mr. Carney:

He joins from Google where he was senior vice president of global sales and go-to-market for Motorola Mobility. According to the announcement, “Mr. Carney was recruited by Google to lead the turnaround of Motorola Mobility, achieving 130% sales growth from 2013 to 2014.”

As if that weren’t enough to convince you of his chops, he has also served in senior executive and C-level roles for Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Affinity Mobile—each of which experienced sustained sales growth under his leadership.

Investment injection from Harbinger Capital is proving to be the catalyst Novatel needed to really take a run at things. Since coming on board, Novatel has appointed an entirely new management team and begun what’s sure to be a spate of strategic acquisitions. We’ve got our eye on a few additional candidates already.

CEO Alex Mashinsky is swinging for the fences with the Carney hire—we can’t wait to see what he does next.
